Volunteer: Acworth E's Club Volunteer

Volunteers needed to interact with High Functioning Autism Teens in a fun environment!!

E's club is a safe place where teens on the High Functioning Autism Spectrum (HFAS) can meet and make friends.  Each Friday we need enthusiastic volunteers to help at e's club.  Come hang out with this special group of kids and help foster social interaction.   Volunteers can help by playing a game with a teen, by participating in that week’s activity, or simply by chatting with a child who is sitting alone. Beginning September 8, volunteers are needed from 7:00-10:00pm every Friday. Help be a 'friend' to the teens on the HFAS that we serve!

Interested volunteers will need to complete a volunteer application and a criminal background check.  You do not need to commit to a certain number of Fridays and can volunteer when it is convenient for your schedule.  We are happy to sign off on any school credit related volunteer hours.

For questions or to apply, contact Rachel Hanthorn-Kolis at rachelhk@erinshopeforfriends.org.

Volunteer: Volunteer Academic Tutors - All subjects and disciplines

Adult & Commuter Student Affairs (ACSA) offers appointment based, individualized academic support and peer tutoring to KSU's commuter, adult learner, nontraditional and traditional students.

We are seeking peer tutors to volunteer and to be able to commit to providing support for at least 3 hours per week, no more than 15 hours per week.

The primary job function of ACSA's tutors is to provide academic support to nontraditional, adult learner, and commuter students based on their expertise and knowledge in given subject areas.  The tutor is expected to have knowledge above the level of students with whom they will primarily be working.

ACSA tutors are required to have an A grade in chosen subject to tutor.  Academic (math) tutors may be required to have basic to intermediate knowledge in trigonometry or calculus depending upon student level. All math tutors should have mastery of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and basic mathematical concepts.  ACSA tutors may be required to assist students in understanding calculations done by hand and by calculator or the use of graphing calculators.  Preferred overall GPA is 3.75 to 4.0, preferred 4.0 in subject area that will be tutored.

Tutors are required to attend any and all training meetings.

Tutors are encouraged to promote independent thinking and work on assignments and must be careful not to complete homework for students to avoid misconduct.  Tutors are expected to motivate and challenge students.  This is an important aspect of a tutor's job and perhaps the most important in that the tutor should foster a healthy sense of accomplishment and self-esteem in the student to promote continued academic growth and development at KSU.

All academic support tutoring sessions are 50 minutes in length and will take place in a Tutor Station in the ACSA Center, in the STURGIS LIBRARY on the Kennesaw Campus on Saturday and Sunday, and on the Marietta Campus.

All academic support tutors are hired, trained, mentored and supervised by Veronica Jones.
